Samuel F.B. Morse

I chose to do a report on Samuel F.B. Morse because he contributed the most to us human by inventing the Morse code.

Samuel F.B. Morse was born in 1791. He was an American artist and inventor. He was known for his invention of the electric telegraph and the Morse code.

Morse was born in Charlestown, Massachusetts on April 27, 1791. He was educated at Yale University. He studied painting in London and became a successful portrait painter and sculptor. In 1825 he helped to found the National Academy of Design in New York City. In 1826 he became the first president of this academy. Then he continued his painting and became a professor of painting and sculpture at New York University in 1832. At that time he became interested in chemical and electrical experiments and developed a device for an electromagnetic telegraph that he completed in 1836. He also invented a code, which was known as the Morse code, for use with his telegraph instrument. Several scientists at that time also gave Morse great financial and technical help with his work on the telegraph and Morse code.

In 1843 the U.S. Congress offered $30,000 for Morse to construct a telegraph line for experiment between Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland. The line was successfully installed. Then on May 24, 1844, Morse sent the first message: “What hath God wrought!”

By inventing the Morse code, Morse received many honors from people around the world. Later he experimented with submarine cable telegraphy.

The Morse can be considered one oft the most significant inventions in world history since made communication much easier for people of the early time.
